Miami: UnitedHealthcare buys Preferred Care, Medica HMOs

To much of the rest of the world, South Florida mild depression is seen as a buying opportunity.  The latest: the Minnesota healthcare giant United Healthcare jumps into the South Florida Medicare market by buying two local health maintenance organizations.  By doing so, they killed two birds with one stone:  1) They find a way to squeeze more profits by streamlining operations, 2) They get a built-in location to snowbird.  Despite some people’s inhibitions, mixing business with pleasure can be wonderful, to paraphrase Mae West.
