Miami: Insider Dealing

Grant Theft Auto, Miami Vice, even Burn Notice. They all get it wrong. The crooks aren’t on the streets of Miami. The real crooks are in the board rooms of Miami.

The latest example of real crime in Miami, is among our political ranks.

For example, before 2008, when Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz joined U. S. Construction as a director, the general contractor was a nonplayer at Miami International Airport.

But in the last three years, the county owned airport has become a jobs bonanza for the Coral Gables company, which pays Diaz a six-figure income. All the while, Diaz has served as chairman or vice chairman of the County Commission’s committee overseeing MIA. Coincidence?
